Distractions and Things Above
"If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory" - Colossians 3:1-4
How often are we focused on the things around us? Work, household duties, family, friends, wants, needs, life goals, etc. Should I mention facebook, t.v., texting, browsing blogs like this one? Our days are consumed and we hit our beds exhausted, hoping to catch enough hours to make it through the next day.
Is this what life is?
Paul is reminding us that our life isn't here, and it isn't on a screen, and it isn't in a promotion, or in meeting the next deadline, or in paying the electric bill.
Our life is in heaven - our life is in Christ.
When we said yes to faith in Jesus, we didn't just accept his death for our sins. We accepted his resurrection for our life. This means that we are now heavenly people, destined for God's kingdom. In order to live according to this gift we have been given, we must focus our eyes and hearts on the things that are above.
If you're curious what that looks like, it would be worth reading the rest of the chapter! All the "dos" and "don'ts" considered, as we focus ourselves on who Christ is, spending time studying him rather than the distractions of this age, we will become more and more like him (2 Cor. 3:18).
This is life, to behold him and set our hearts on the kingdom of God.
We are transformed, and walk according to his ways because we are more and more filled with the life of heaven rather than the draining distractions of earth.
